Thanksgiving is one time of the year where overindulgence, football and family come together in a perfect trinity, compounded by the shenanigans of Black Friday and all the family drama that come with this time of the year. However, as many of us know and tons of television and movies have pointed out, family drama is normally preceded by the mixing up of facts. That’s probably why from the early age of childhood we are obsessed with games such as broken telephone, but we at Sir Holiday thought it’s time to clear through the muck and decipher what is truly fact and what is mere fiction. It’s time to check out some fun facts surrounding Thanksgiving.

First off whoever thinks our ancestors did not know how to throw a party are sadly mistaken, this assertion is backed up by the fact that the original Thanksgiving feast lasted for three whole days, goodness gracious and they didn’t even have to rush off to the malls for Black Friday. An even more surprising fact however is that no one really knows if turkey was present as a menu item on the original Thanksgiving feast, but other more aquatic items did make it to the feast, with swans and seals seeming to be firm favorites.

Thanksgiving Fast Facts

Perhaps most shocking of all is the fact that even though the original Thanksgivingmeal took place in 1621, it took a whole 200 years before Thanksgiving was declared as a legitimate national holiday by President Abraham Lincoln. If you’ve ever wondered if Thanksgiving had a champion proclaiming its right to become a holiday, then wonder no more, because we have found the women in question. A certain Miss Sarah J. Hale petitioned urgently for many, many years to have Thanksgiving to be moved into an official public holiday. Another way you may know this woman if you have not yet heard of her contribution to the holiday program is that she is the author of the beloved nursery rhyme Little Bo Beep.

If you’ve ever sat in the car on a trip to family or friends over Thanksgiving then you know the feeling that it seems everyone and their dog is sitting in a car on the highway with you, hence someone decided to investigate the truth behind this feeling. That someone was the American Automobile Association or AAA if you prefer the shortened version, the AAA has discovered that 42.2 million Americans covered a distance of a minimum of 50 miles, possibly more in order to get to their destination for Thanksgiving. Because staying at home on Thanksgiving is just not done, evidently.

Have you ever wondered the true fate of the glorious and rather lucky ‘Pardoned turkey’ well it seems that the pardoned turkey gets to do more than live, some have gone on to visit Disney Land and can even visit Mount Vernon state in Washington.
