TRICK OR TREAT

Taking your festive traditional treats to the next level

diy halloween treats

Halloween is one of the happiest times of year. Kids are cooling down from the summer heat and getting back into the swing of the school year, perhaps even looking as far ahead as to winter. If you enjoy the season, you’ll be sure to decorate your property with some fake spider webs and grinning jack-o’-lanterns, and of course, you should be planning ahead to think of the different types of candy or treats you should hand out to the little ones when they come knocking.

It’s one thing to just buy a bag of bite-size candy at the store and hand them out without doing anything extra, but you’d gain favor amongst the neighborhood kids if you gave out something a little more special.

Here are some ideas to improve your trick-or-treating game!

Setting the tone

Let’s take this logically. If you’re giving out candy, you should consider a creative presentation. Kids love to see adults getting into the spirit! It helps them feel more comfortable expressing themselves, especially as they get older and going trick-or-treating starts to be viewed as something for little kids only.

creative costumes

Consider dressing in a fun costume, especially a couple’s costume with your spouse or roommate. At least throw on a festive shirt or headband or some other accessory that takes relatively little effort. Next, consider picking up one of those prank candy bowls that has a fake witch hand hidden inside for some extra spooks!

DIY – Presentation

You have plenty of options to choose from when it comes to thinking up fun treats to hand out. Aside from the regular store bought, individual candies, you could invest in king-size candies, individually wrapped packets of candy corn, pretzels, or fruit snacks.

You could even take it one step further and make your very own customized Halloween treat bags. Swing by the market and pick up some festive gift baggies and ribbons – they come in all sizes, colors, and patters. While you’re there, you should check out some of their more festively-wrapped candies, mix bags, party bags, and other variety packs that will give you lots of options to explore your creativity (and nurse your sweet tooth, too).

DIY – Preparation

Once you’ve decided what kind of treat bag you want to make, it’s only a matter of doing it!

One great idea is to toss together some Halloween-colored Hershey kisses into a bag for some combination of colors. Another good idea is to fill up some Latex or rubber gloves with candies and tie them with cute ribbons so the kids can play with some spooky disembodied hands. You could also simply make creative labels for typical candies. Mini marshmallows can become ghost babies, dark chocolate chips become bat remnants, and candy corn becomes pumpkin teeth. Even in clear plastic bags this make great creative treats.

If you’re running out of ideas of cute combinations of candies to put in little gift bags, you could go ahead and put regular candies in specialized bags!

All it takes is some mini paper bags and markers to draw a ghoulish face. You don’t have to be an artist to make a fun and creative decorative treat for your little neighborhood friends. If you’re feeling especially creative, you can glue on some googly eyes for a little added flair.

Don’t feel like putting things in bags? Wrap up lollipops in white tissues, tie with a white, black, or orange ribbon, and take a sharpie to draw a cute little ghostly face on them.

Or you can cut up strips of tissue paper or white printer paper and wrap candies in them for an adorable mummified effect. If you’re feeling similarly crafty, you could use pom poms and pipe cleaners to create bats, spiders, gravestones, and other spooky decorations.

Ultimately, it doesn’t exactly matter if you put so much effort into your Halloween treats or not. At the end of the day, the kids will likely be happy to see any kind of candy in their bag, no matter how color-coordinated they are (or aren’t). So just try and have some fun and don’t be afraid to turn to online resources for inspiration, pictures and more specific instructions if you’re still stuck.

Happy Halloween!
