The 14th of February is prized throughout much of the world as a day where you can profess your love for your partner, or for your friends and family. Fun fact my dad was the first person to ever give me a Valentine’s Day gift and ever since then I’ve always had a special affinity for the little chocolate hearts, along with the white and red teddy bears, as well as endless flowers that tend to accompany the day. Well, that’s enough of a history lesson let’s break into some facts surrounding Valentine’s Day, shall we?

Each year, in the run up to Valentine’s Day an estimated 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold for this special love filled day. This makes it very clear why dentists are clearly benefiting from our ages endless love affair with all sorts of sugary treats. Speaking of sugary treats, have you ever received or bought yourself a candy heart on a stick, this treat is evidently extremely popular as at least 8 billion of them are sold every year during the season of love.

But the thought may have crossed your mind by know, as a simple follower of economic theory, that all of these gifts have to be paid for by someone.

Obviously this question boggled researchers minds as well because there is an answer to which one of the sexes spends more on Valentine’s gifts. And, the final answer is that, believe it or not, men spend more on Valentine’s gifts than women. Men average on around $130 per gift, which is often more than double than what the majority of women spend on their gifts. However, it must be noted that it is women who purchase around 85% of Valentine’s Day cards, evidently cards are not very high on the list for the opposite gender.
